A CBL challenge thrives through collaboration across classrooms and communities.
Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) is gaining ground because it addresses a concern many teachers recognise: how to reconnect learning with real life. Its strength lies in a simple structure — Engage, Investigate, Act — that invites students to confront meaningful issues rather than complete isolated tasks.
A Challenge-Based Learning process never stands alone. It is supported by an ecosystem of actors who contribute insight, motivation and expertise. Understanding these roles helps educators, students and local communities collaborate more effectively — and shows why CBL feels so dynamic in practice.
At the centre is the Challenge Provider: a municipality, association, company or community actor who introduces a real issue for students to address. Their presence gives weight to the process.

The Teamcher — teacher as facilitator and co-designer — negotiates the challenge, adapts it to the class context, guides teamwork and creates the right conditions for reflection. Alongside them, a Support Team of colleagues, tutors or experts may offer additional perspectives when needed.
External mentors and community stakeholders enrich the process further. They bring contextual knowledge, feedback and viewpoints that bridge the school and the surrounding territory. Learning becomes a shared responsibility rather than a closed activity.
Two short examples show how this relational dimension works:
- In a rural area, a craft cooperative invited a class to explore how traditional techniques could be reimagined for contemporary needs.
- In a coastal town, an accessibility organisation accompanied students to test a public space using mobility aids, generating meaningful discussions about dignity and design.
The CBL ecosystem functions because it is relational. It relies on trust, dialogue and a shared sense of purpose.
