What “Sustainable” Means in the New European Bauhaus

NEB sees sustainability as a balance between ecological integrity, social inclusion and economic viability.

Within the New European Bauhaus, sustainability is understood as a multidimensional concept. It goes beyond reducing impact and requires a balance among People, Planet and Profit — ensuring that solutions are socially meaningful, environmentally responsible and economically feasible.

A sustainable approach considers People by promoting inclusion, accessibility and safe, inspiring environments. It honours the Planet by prioritising regenerative materials, reduced harm and thoughtful interactions with natural systems. And it addresses Profit by ensuring solutions can last: practical, affordable and resilient over time.

This perspective aligns with the European Green Deal and its ambition for a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. It also gives students a practical tool for analysing professional futures within the RE:Think Your Profession challenge. Weekly tasks guide them to reflect on what feels sustainable — and what does not — within their chosen field. They then gather external viewpoints, compare findings in groups and co-create a visual Miro map.

Thinking about sustainability through this integrated lens helps students recognise the interconnected nature of social, economic and environmental choices. It encourages proposals that endure and contribute to a balanced future.
